MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis remains abuzz about the multi-billion dollar investment in Artificial Intelligence right here in the Bluff City.

XAI Gigafactory of Compute will reportedly be housed at the old Electrolux building near Boxtown. However, there are still many questions surrounding the nearly complete deal including how many jobs the new development will bring to Memphis.

Our partners at the Memphis Business Journal say their sources say it could be the low to mid-hundreds.

The non-profit Code Crew is currently holding “Code School” which is a 7-month boot camp for adults that will prepare the students for a career in software engineering.

“We have some students that leave us and go work for Red River, Regional one , there’s a student at chase bank, zip which is actually in New York and AutoZone,” says Code Crew co-founder Audrey Willis.

Code Crew Co-Founder Meka Egwuekwe says many of the skills learned in this class could be part of the future supercomputer workforce.

“Fundamentally it’s all computational thinking, solving problems and thinking critically,” said Egwuekwe.

However, it’s unclear how many jobs will be coming.

Musk and Memphis City leaders are not saying.

“So, we do t know the specific jobs or how many they will be bringing but what excites me not just those jobs but the opportunities in jobs that come from companies and others that are launching their companies in a place like Memphis to be near the supercomputer,” said Egwuekwe.

Still some students, even those who may benefit from this announcement, say they are cautiously optimistic.

“When I first heard about this story, I was initially scared and really concerned because mainly over the fact this project steam rolling over our community and not actually embracing our community it,” said Code School student Jill Johnson.

“Like I’m scared that some of these jobs not being really equitable jobs,” said Johnson.

The University of Memphis plans to boost its academic and research capabilities in artificial intelligence with a million-dollar investment.

Officials say the university will offer a wide range of educational experiences.

Future programs will use this strong foundation to incorporate A-I into more academic disciplines to attract more students.

“Another piece of talent is the research because remember these companies are not stagnant. They are for the future. They need really smart, PHD students who are graduating g in fields like machine learning and data science,” says Jasbir Dhaliwal, Vice-President of Research and Innovation at the University of Memphis.
