Flu hospitalizations reach highest early-season level in 16 years as Memphis doctors warn of what could be ahead
Flu season is already sending more Americans to the hospital than usual for this time of year, raising concerns among Mid-South doctors about what could be ahead. Flu hospitalizations have reached their highest level for this point in the season since 2010, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At Regional One Health in Memphis, emergency room doctors are already treating patients with the virus, including some with severe symptoms. Dr. Anna Yang, an emergency medicine physician at Regional One Healthcare, said patients with flu often experience more than typical cough and congestion. Dr Steve Threlkeld, an infectious disease specialist at Baptist Memorial Hospital, said the increase in hospitalizations is concerning but does not necessarily indicate an especially severe flu season. While hospitalizations are increasing nationally, Dr. Threlkesld said hospitals in the Mid-South are not experiencing a major surge in flu patients yet. The CDC recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, with rare exceptions.
