Auburn uses new Buc-ee's for recruiting pitch, starts meme war

Auburn boasts of only SEC Buc-ee's, sets off food arms race. Auburn University has launched a meme war with the popular convenience store, Buc-ee's, for recruiting athletes. Ernest Campbell, a three-star wide receiver recruit from Refugio in South Texas, tweeted a graphic apparently sent to him by Auburn that reads "the only SEC school with a Buc-EE's" and includes the rest stop's mascot standing back-to-back with an Auburn player, the sign for the store, a long row of gas pumps, and a statue. Other schools had their own spin on the tweet, as if it were Hal Mumme's air raid offense. Memphis also had its own attraction, with the Bass Pro Shops pyramid created as an homage to the city's Egyptian namesake, and the Seattle Mariners topped them all with a brag. This all harkens back to the great Baylor recruiting pitch failure of 2015, when the school was busted for promising a bunch of new food options coming to Waco without any proof.

Buc-ee's can boast the cleanest bathrooms, (perhaps speciously) the largest convenience store in the world, and the longest car wash in America as it continues to spread across the nation. Now, apparently, the beloved beaver nuggets and brisket stopover is fodder for recruiting athletes.

It all began last week when three-star wide receiver recruit Ernest Campbell, from Refugio in South Texas, tweeted a graphic apparently sent to him by Auburn.

"The only SEC school with a Buc-ee's" reads the image, which also includes the rest stop's mascot standing back-to-back with an Auburn player, the sign for the store, a long row of gas pumps, and a Buc-ee's statue. The Auburn location opened in April. Predictably, once the tweet was picked up by the popular account no context college football, other schools had their own spin on the Buc-ee's tweet, as if it were Hal Mumme's air raid offense. Lane Kiffin, head coach of Auburn rivals Ole Miss, touted Oxford, Mississippi's proximity to the only Chevron that sells chicken on a stick in the SEC. Memphis one-upped with its own attraction: the Bass Pro Shops pyramid, created as an homage to the city's Egyptian namesake, and because it's funny. There were others: an on-campus Publix, a Bojangles, but the Seattle Mariners topped them all with a, uh, brag, we suppose. We prefer our herbivorous insects deep-fried, but it's still a nice swing from the M's. This all harkens back to the great Baylor recruiting pitch failure of 2015, when the school was busted — without any real consequences other than it being incredibly embarrassing — for promising a bunch of new food options coming to Waco without any proof. The difference is, however, that Auburn does have a Buc-ee's and Baylor is still waiting for that elusive first Whole Foods.
