MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Thursday marked the 56th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the civil rights leader was shot and killed at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis in 1968.

Throughout the day thousands of people, including family, gathered at The National Civil Rights Museum to honor everything Dr. King did for our country.

“There was no more important place for us to be on this day this year than at The National Civil Rights Museum,” Arndrea Waters King said.

Arndrea Waters King is the wife of Martin Luther King the Third who talked about the day 56 years ago that changed his life forever.

“The life of myself, my siblings and my mom changed in just a few minutes,” King said.

The family said they know this day comes every year and it doesn’t get any easier, but they stressed it is not just about morning the loss it is about continuing the legacy of Dr. King and what he did for so many.

“In one sense it is a dark day, but the hope is that we must continue to fuse this for this generation and generations unborn,” King said.

The legacy is one that the city of Memphis is looking to continue, on Thursday the city unveiled new photos they put up around the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Reflection Park showing major milestones in American history.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young talked about how important this landmark is.

“It is a space for the public to come and reflect on his significant contributions not just to Memphis, not just to the south, but to the whole world, so we are honored to have this park refreshed for the next generation of young people and families,” Young said.

Dr. King’s son said at the end of the day there has been a lot of change since 1968 but stressed there is even more that needs to be done.

“Hopefully some ideas are infused, and people are inspired to go back to their communities and create change because our nation is in constant change,” King said.
