New Le Bonheur Children's Hospital's cardiac lab opens

Jason Johnson, MD, Associate Chief of Cardiology and Director of Cardiac MRI at Le Bonheur, called the cardiac lab a "game changer." Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, completed a $95-million expansion with the opening of a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Cardiac Catherization Lab. The new lab, the first in Tennessee and eighth in the U.S., will enable doctors to perform heart catheterizations in the MRI environment without the harmful effects of radiation. The lab also allows for live-streaming from the lab to demonstrate techniques to other professionals remotely. The expansion is part of the hospital's larger project, which is also completing a Virtual Reality Lab to enable physicians to virtually build a 3D model of a patient’s heart and learn where needed devices may need to be inserted.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - One part of Le Bonheur Children's Hospital's $95-million expansion was officially completed April 2nd when a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Cardiac Catherization Lab opened.

A ribbon cutting was held, marking the achievement and the expanded capabilities for Le Bonheur's Heart Institute to better make diagnosis and detections quicker.

The hospital's new MRI suite represents the first one in Tennessee and just the eighth of its kind in the U.S., according to the hospital's media release.

The space will additionally enable doctors to live-stream from the lab to demonstrate techniques to other professionals remotely.

Jason Johnson, MD, Associate Chief of Cardiology and Director of Cardiac MRI at Le Bonheur, called the cardiac lab a "game changer."

"We will be able to perform heart catheterizations in the MRI environment that will avoid the harmful effects of radiation for our patients,” he said. “Our partnership and collaboration with national leaders in technology will provide new diagnostic and interventional procedures for children with heart disease in Memphis and the Mid-South.”

Le Bonheur officials say the hospital is also completing a Virtual Reality Lab that will equip physicians to virtually build a 3D model of a patient’s heart, learn where needed devices may need to be inserted and create an action plan for procedures and surgeries.

The planned four-story total expansion is supposed to be finished in May, according to officials.
