MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Botanic Garden (MBG) has a new Executive Director, MaryLynn Mack, following the retirement of Michael Allen at the end of June, announced The Garden on a press release, Wednesday.
Before taking the position, Mack worked as Chief Operating Officer at South Coast Botanic Garden, in Palos Verdes, California and in Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. She also served as Presidental-appointed Board Member of the Institute of Museum and Library Services and is the past President and a current Board Member of the American Public Gardens Association.
“We are thrilled to welcome MaryLynn to not only the Memphis Botanic Garden but also to the Memphis community,” said David Scully, MBG’s Board President. “MaryLynn will not only advance the Garden but will be an asset to the city as a dedicated non-profit leader striving to foster connections within the community she serves.”
Mack was hired as part of a nationwide search, following the announcement that Allen was retiring, back in February.
Allen began with the Garden in January 2017 after 25 years with International Paper and six years as CEO of Catholic Charities of West Tennessee. MBG said he raised more than $12 million for a modernization of the campus, increased the number of visitors, and expanded earned revenues during his tenure. Officials said he has tripled MBG’s financial reserves over the years.
Mack will begin her tenure on August 19, almost two months after the retirement of Allen, whose last day is June 30. In between those weeks, MBG’s Assistant Executive Director Mary-Helen Butler will serve as Interim Executive Director.
"Her commitment to innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity is clear; she is the perfect leader to build on the Garden’s recent momentum towards modernization and horticultural excellence,” Scully said.
