MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Tennessee lawmaker plans to file legislation to reestablish permits and background checks for carrying a handgun in Tennessee.

Sen. London Lamar, D-Memphis, will join the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission at a press conference Tuesday to announce the proposed legislation. Lamar, a member of the Crime Commission, says she will sponsor legislation next winter to reinstate permits, training and background checks for handgun owners who intend to go armed.

Lamar has tried to pass similar legislation every year since the Tennessee Legislature passed a law in 2019 eliminating mandatory training and background checks for going armed in public, according to a media release.

A recent Vanderbilt poll shows Tennesseans are ready for new common sense gun safety reform, according to the Tennessee Senate Democratic Caucus. Meanwhile, Republicans and Gov. Bill Lee have worked together to protect the rights of gun owners.

The Crime Commission is hosting the press conference to raise awareness about the group’s crime prevention efforts, including their Walk Against Gun Violence on June 15 at Melrose High School in Memphis.
