MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Four children and one man suffered serious injuries after a shooting on Interstate 240 led to a citywide pursuit Tuesday, police said.
According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers responded just before 5:15 p.m. Tuesday to a shooting on Interstate 240 at Poplar Avenue in East Memphis.
Officers found an unoccupied Chevrolet Malibu with bullet holes on the interstate, police said.
Officers tracked the vehicle to the 2700 block of North Germantown Parkway in Bartlett but it refused to stop and took off, police said.
MPD said that suspects in the car fired shots at offers in the area of James Road and Highland Street. At one point, an officer crashed on the 3500 block of James Road in the Raleigh area but was not injured, police added.
The Outlander was then tracked by air to the area of Manhue Drive and Lakeland Drive in Frayser, where it crashed. Police said that officers chased the suspects on foot and two people were detained.
The two suspects were identified as 18-year-old Lorenzo Watson and 21-year-old Kendrick Ray, police said.
Both were charged with several offenses, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to MPD.
Ray was also charged with a carjacking and aggravated assault that happened on June 3 at 583 South Parkway East, the location of a BP gas station in South Memphis.
The Outlander used in the police chase is believed to have been stolen, police said.
A 30-year-old man and four children — ages 2, 3, 3 and 8 — and one adult were taken to a hospital by private vehicle, all in critical condition, police said. The children were later transferred to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
MPD did not say what led to the shooting.
Witnesses FOX13 talked to were shocked by the chaos that broke out during rush hour traffic Tuesday afternoon.
Johnny Malone, a witness, told FOX13, "We saw the helicopter flying. Next thing we know, police are flying down Range Line (Road). We come out front and see the car down here in the ditch, then police and state troopers come from everywhere."
Malone added: “They are jumping out of their cars, running behind these houses looking for whoever they are chasing."
