Tulsa's PJ Haggerty was named Thursday as the 2024 Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year award winner.

Also on Thursday, On3sports reported that Haggerty committed to transfer to one of Tulsa's most heated American Athletic Conference rivals, Memphis. According to On3sports, Haggerty said he chose Memphis over Texas, Kansas State and Providence.

Haggerty, a 6-3 guard, averaged 21.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals in 31 games as he helped the Golden Hurricane improve from 5-25 to 16-15. He was the highest-scoring freshman in Tulsa history.

"PJ Haggerty had an immediate impact this season when he took the floor for the Golden Hurricane," said James Wilhelmi, executive member of CollegeInsider.com and Senior Analyst. "As a redshirt freshman he led the team in scoring, assists and made more free throws than anyone else on the team attempted. Most importantly Tulsa's win total more than tripled from the year before. PJ has earned the right to be called the Kyle Macy Freshman of the Year."

Macy was a freshman star at Purdue and then transferred after that season to Kentucky, where he helped lead the Wildcats to a national title in 1978. He played seven seasons in the NBA, primarily with the Phoenix Suns. The award winner is determined by a 10-member committee, consisting two senior staff members of collegeinbsider.com plus current and former head coaches.

This spring was Haggerty's second trip in as many years to the transfer portal after starting his career at TCU.

Haggerty faced Memphis once this season. On Jan. 4, he had 27 points, with 10-of-19 shooting from the field, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. But he made only 5-of-11 free throws in a 78-75 loss.
