Record heat, near-record drought leave Memphis primed for fires

Memphis has had just 2.29 inches of rain since Aug. 1, and fire officials are urging caution with fire pits as dry leaves pile up. Landscapers are losing work because lawns have stopped growing. Memphis had its hottest September on record dating back to 1875, with an average daily temperature of 84 degrees, 8 degrees above normal, according to the National Weather Service. The National Weather Services also noted that the Memphis area has not seen over an inch of rainfall on any single day since July 25, with only sporadic rainfall recorded in the 89 days since then. This is expected to exacerbate a potential wildfire outbreak.
