Crime Commission Tackles Shelby County Truancy Crisis
Tens of thousands of Shelby County students are considered truant, and community leaders gathered Saturday to discuss how to address the problem before families become involved with the court system. The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission hosted a town hall to discuss the issue of truancy in Shelby County, addressing it before families become involved in the court system. The discussion was part of the commission's effort to develop the next five-year Safe Community Action Plan. Educators, juvenile justice officials, and community leaders discussed the connection between school absenteeism and delinquency, noting that many truant students are elementary school children. Juvenile Court Chief Magistrate Afton Strong, who oversees truancy docket, encouraged parents and guardians to seek help early, stating resources are available before attendance problems become court cases. The goal is to keep more children in the classroom and out of the courtroom.
