Storm recovery efforts continue in Tipton, McNairy counties 1 year later after tornado hits

TENNESSEE, USA — Tennessee federally declared seven disasters in 2023 — the most in a single year — with Tipton County becoming a federal assistance recipient for five of those declarations, including the tornadoes that struck the state on March 31 and April 1.
After tornado hits on March 31, 2023, McNairy and Tipton counties were among the 10 counties that received both FEMA Individual and Public Assistance, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) said.
“The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency’s priority following a disaster is to ensure Tennesseans are met with the resources they need for a swift recovery,” TEMA Director Patrick C. Sheehan said. “The road to recovery is long and difficult, the state remains steadfast in its commitment to support survivors every step of the way.”
Right now, 62 Public Assistance projects have been approved to help counties and private nonprofits recover from the March 31 and April 1 tornadoes. Seven projects have yet to be approved currently.
Over $56,000,000 have been allocated to these projects, connected with the declared disaster. More than $42,000,000 came from the federal government. To fund half of the non-federal share, the state has budgeted over $6,000,000, while local applicants are to cover the remaining balance of over $6,000,000.
TEMA said Many resources became available to those affected by the tornados, including Crisis Cleanup, which connected survivors with volunteer groups. The American Red Cross gave shelter to people in Tipton County and mobile feeding in both McNairy and Tipton counties following the days after the tornado hits. Those shelters closed on April 12, 2023.
Additionally, for survivors who may have underwent distress or a mental health crisis, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration and the Tennessee Statewide Crisis Line were and are still available.
"Maria and I continue to pray for all Tennesseans who were impacted by the tornadoes on March 31, 2023," Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said. "As recovery efforts continue, there is great hope in the outpouring of support that Tennesseans have shown in serving their neighbors during their darkest days."
