Between Nashville And Memphis Is A Lovely Tennessee Wildlife Preserve With Scenic Hikes And Birdwatching
Spanning 50,000 acres, this sprawling wildlife sanctuary is a hiking haven and an essential destination for over 300 species of migratory birds. The Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge, located in the northwest corner of the Volunteer State, stretches across the state for over 50,000 acres and offers hiking trails, scenic drives, and observation decks for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. The refuge is comprised of three units, including Big Sandy, Duck River, and Busseltown, which are located near Parsons. The park was established in 1945 as a safe place for migratory birds to rest, nest, and refuel during their cross-country journeys. The main trails include the Britton Ford Trail and Nature Discovery Trail, which close from November 15 to March 15 each year and during permitted hunting weekends in the fall. However, these trails are closed from late fall to late winter for visiting waterfowl and other migratory bird. The Refuge also offers free admission.
