MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Owners looking to keep their Hyundais out of the hands of thieves can receive a free software update on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Old Fairgrounds.

MPD Police Chief CJ Davis along with executives of Hyundai Motor America announced the three-day software clinic for certain Hyundai owners.

“As you know, our Hyundai vehicles – our Hyundai owners in our city and across the country have experienced an increase in car thefts,” Davis said.

Police have learned that the vehicle brand is highly sought after by Memphis’ youngest thieves.

“Unfortunately, our young people are leading in stealing vehicles around our city,” Davis said. “The top ages are 16 and 17-years-old.”

While the numbers from MPD show a nearly 32 percent decrease in auto thefts and attempted auto thefts compared to this time in 2023, some Hyundai models are still easy targets thanks to a social media trend called the “Hyundai/Kia TikTok Challenge.”

“So, 2011 through 2021 Hyundai vehicles that use the key-turn to start ignition system – we have a software update that specifically addresses the type of theft popularized on the TikTok video,” Vice President of Hyundai Motor America, Dave VandeLinde said.

Hyundai is in the process of setting up a 40-foot by 100-foot covered auto clinic on Tiger Lane in the shadow of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, where technicians will install immobilizing software at no charge.

Technicians will install a vehicle communication interface, also known as a VCI, underneath the dashboard.

Once it lights up, it will play a little song and let the technician know it’s connected. It should take 12 to 15 minutes for the software update to install.

Hyundai is expecting as many as a thousand vehicles to be serviced during the free event.

On Thursday and Friday, they will be there from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, they will be there from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
