MEMPHIS, Tenn. — To help combat the rise of stolen Hyundai vehicles, the car company and the Memphis Police Department are teaming up to host a free, walk-in anti-theft update event this weekend.

Hyundai will be installing software for 2011 to 2021 vehicles to turn them into push to start systems.

The company hopes this public event brings enough people out that want solutions sooner than later.

“We know because of work obligations, because of children obligations, because of sports activities, some people just can't find the time to get into the dealer to make an appointment to have this done,” said Dave Vandelinde, a Vice President with Hyundai Motors America. “So, I really want everyone to know this is no cost whatsoever. This is no appointment necessary. We don't even need ID. All we need is a serial number of the vehicle and everyone who shows up is gonna get a complementary steering wheel lock."

The clinics are taking place in the pink lot at Liberty Park in Midtown Memphis. That’s at 2461 Tiger Lane S.

The company said the update will only take 20 to 30 minutes.
