Organizers and City Leaders Condemn Proposed MLGW Rate Hikes - Memphis Flyer
"Please do not burden our citizens anymore," a community advocate said. Community advocates and elected officials are urging decision-makers to reject proposed Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) rate increases. The utility company is planning to raise its gas and water rates from 2027 through 2029. The proposed increase was approved by MLGW’s Board of Commissioners during its October 21st board meeting. City Council member JB Smiley, Jr. has called on his fellow council members and Mayor Paul Young to reject the proposed rate increases and urge them to review MLGW's spending, operational efficiencies, and alternative funding sources. Glenda Hicks, co-founder of 21st Century Memphis or Bust!, has also called for a more equitable system for residential customers. Doug McGowen, CEO of MLGW, said the three-year increase would allow the company to organize its spending over a long period of time.
