Better Win a District: Tennessee's Ninth

Justin Pearson is leading a David-like challenge to Republican rule. For the third and final edition of Better Win a District, we focus on the Ninth Congressional District in Memphis, Tennessee. This district is part of Tennessee's Blackest city and part of which is represented by Democrat Steve Cohen, who has served since 2007. However, Republican gerrymandering efforts saw Memphis lose large chunks of Memphis proper and Cohen retired, leading to Pearson's challenge. Pearson rose to national prominence after he and two other members of the Tennessee House of Representatives were expelled by its Republican supermajority for staging a gun control protest on the House floor. The new maps and Cohen's departure have galvanized Pearson into a symbolic fight against the anti-democratic nature of the modern GOP. The district has also been hit hard by the Trump administration's draconian approach to immigration and law enforcement.
